Brassai, born Gyula Halasz, was born on September 9, 1899 in Hungary.
He began his career in 1920 as a journalist and studied at the Berlin-Charlottenburn Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1924 he moved to Paris where he would live the rest of his life.
Halasz' journalist job, and love of Paris led him into photography.
He went by the name Brassai, which means Brasso.
He began his career taking pictures of Paris by night because it allowed him to seize Paris' beauty.
In 1933 he published his first book of photographs, "Paris de Nuit" which means Paris by Night.
He also photographed high society, intellectuals, and the grand operas. He also photographed many famous artists and
writers.

Paris de Nuit
Brassai's first photographs were published on December 2, 1932 by Art et metiers graphiques, which was Charles Peignot's
publishing business.
The first review was of Paris de Nuit which was published in a Dutch newspaper, the Niuwe Rotterdamshe Courant on
December 29, 1932.
An English edition of the photography book appeared in 1933 from Batsford Gallery in London.
Brassai said his photos of Paris by night were " a phantasmal and unreal Paris, plunged in darkness and fog".
