Many colleges and universities offer beginners photography courses. AU offers ART/COM2670 Introduction to Photography , which is the beginners course for black and white photography.
Also new to the 2008-2009 school year,
ART3400 Photography II: Digital Black and White and
ART4400 Photography III: Advanced Photography and Imaging

The preferred type of camera one should use is an 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera with lens.

MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES:

1.              Kodak T-Max 400 Film, 24 exposures, minimum SIX rolls.  (NOTE: Sometimes you will find this film offered in 36 exposure rolls; I recommend that you DO NOT use 36 exposures—the film is very long and awkward to handle, not good idea when you are first learning to load film into tanks in the dark!)

2.              Negative Preserver Sheets one for each roll of film shot. You must buy these in advance so you have them ready to receive your negatives once they are developed.

3.              11 x 14” Mounting Board minimum ten sheets.

4.              Black and white photographic printing paper.

5.              Any additional required supplies (3-ring binders, portfolio protective sheets or case, etc.) .

6.              Cameras: Ask around in your family and see if someone has a 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera with lens.
